P3: Describe the multiplatform distribution methods

Multi-platform is a product or system that can work across multiple types of platforms. Radio has several different ways to be accessed and listened by.

Analogue Broadcast

This radio allows listeners to tune into the analogue stations on FM/AM frequencies from home radio and car equipment. This radio functions by picking up the audio signal from the transmission site, known as carriers. The electrical waves are transmitted from the station to the analogue radio and are transmitted continuously, without any disruption to the sound. The advantages to this radio station is that it is eco-friendly by comparison to digital radios, which are computer driven and are able to transmit a truer version of the original recording. However, tuning into an analogue station is manual and relies on the user selecting the best signal and could be a risk as there could not be any good reception in the particular location the listener is at.

Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB)

Digital Audio Broadcasting is a transmission technology designed as a method to bring the benefits of digital to traditional analogue radio broadcasts. The analogue signals are converted to digital (numbers) rather than the radio waves which are used for analogue transmissions. Digital Audio Broadcast offers more choice that aren’t available on the AM/FM, tune themselves automatically, which doesn’t require fixing the dial to get the right frequency and some devices allow you to record or rewind in case the listener missed something. However, the batteries drain quicker than in AM/FM radios and transmission can be limited due to the location.

Internet (e.g. streaming and simulcasting)

This is simply using the internet to listen to radio online through the internet or apps. Most radio programmes have developed to go online and this is a huge difference to how radio used to work before, as with internet radio it can be easily listened on the go and each individual is able to listen to the radio of their choice. However, in order to listen to the radio through a digital device it must require internet connection as it will need a strong connection to stream and although this is applicable if you are at home and have a home Wi-Fi, it will be hard if a listener would like to tune in to a radio programme outside and they don’t have any connection on their device.

Satellite/Terrestrial TV Channels

Satellite radio is a broadcasting satellite service. The satellite’s signals are broadcast nationwide, across a much wider geographical area  is mainly intended for the residents of motor vehicles. It is usually available by subscription and offers subscribers more station and a wider variety of programming options. However, it can be costly alternative to the traditional AM/FM.
