P1: Describe the different radio industry operations
There are many different
radio industries that operate differently for different sectors.
National Commercial Radio
A national commercial
radio are radio stations that produce revenue through advertising. The
advertisements are released by companies which find the commercial radio to be
a good medium to take their message to their customers. Absolute Radio is an
example of this, it is one of the UK’s three Independent National Radio
stations and plays popular rock music. Dave and Mett wake up their listeners
every morning and are on top of having the biggest guests and greatest gigs.
Listeners are able to choose the music they want to hear on the breakfast show.
There are seven options and each is matched for duration, mood, artists and
temp. They have 50& fewer adverts, which gives listeners a chance to get
more songs and allows advertisers to target ads tailored to their age, gender
and location. Absolute Radio Network grows to 4.7 million listeners.
Public Radio
Public radio is a service
that is primarily used for the public. The funding comes from the government or
any fees charged from receivers. Public radio may either be nationally or
locally operated, depending on the country and station. The public radio that
is most common in the UK, is the BBC. The BBC radio has different types of
radio aimed at different audiences. Such as, BBC Radio 1 is airs popular music
aimed at a young audience. BBC Radio 2 airs adult-oriented popular music. All
BBC radio stations are available through analogue radio, digital radio and
online. Different BBC Radio shows have different purposes, whether it is for
entertainment, education or information and there are some BBC radio shows that
have scheduling such as in BBC Radio 1 there is a breakfast show hosted by Greg
James. More than 230,000 extra listeners have been tuning in to Radio 1
breakfast show, according to the RAJAR, in the last three months of 2018 the reach
was 5.1 million.
Internet Radio
Internet radio is
accessed online, you need a broadband connection and home Wi-Fi network rather
than a traditional aerial to listen to it, streaming. Internet radio is not
limited by what signals are broadcasted locally, so you can listen in real time
to thousands of radio shows from all over the world. It’s also possible to
catch up on programmes that have already been broadcasted. Although there are
scheduling’s for the actual radio when it airs, there isn’t a scheduling for
when a listener would want to access and listen to it. The radio station
TalkSPORT is also found on the internet where it covers games about the sports
competitions, live updates and interviews. I believe that this radio show would
be aimed at individuals that are interested in sports and want to hear about
the debates, conversations or aftermath on a particular game that was played. From
October 2018 to March 2019 the total population of listeners was 54,752,000 at
a total of 3,055,000% per week from individuals ages 15+.
