M1: Analyse the structure and content of a programme broadcast by a chosen radio station

'TalkSPORT is owned by a Wireless Group, is a sports radio station and Global Audio Partner of the Premier League. It includes football coverage, breaking sports news, rumours and exclusive interviews.
[this information was found from Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talksport and the talk sport website: https://talksport.com/]

In the Radio show there are different presenters that speak these are; Georgie Bingham, Natalie Sawyer, Andy Goldstein and Sam Matterface. They all play a part to the show in different ways, whether it’s interviewing any players/managers, updating listeners on news or during phone-ins with the listeners.

There are different segments in the talkSport during different times. The first segment is at 12:00am this is where they catch the audience up with news from throughout the day, any results they might have missed and manager and player interviews. Around 6:00am to 10:00pm they round-up mornings breaking sports stories. At 10:00am they talk about the latest sports that has happened throughout the day which includes any breaking stories and the reactions as it happens, this is also done at 2:00pm. I listened to this radio show on the 7th June and on that day there was a match, so at 6:00pm they gave a live coverage and commentary on a match for the Women’s World Cup. Finally, at 10:00pm they catch up their listeners with news throughout the day, this includes results, and managers and player interviews.

As I was listening to this radio segment, I tuned in to the ‘essential round-up of the mornings breaking sports stories’. The mode of address to this radio show is very formal and sensible. This is clearly done as they are talking about different type of sports and updating the listeners with news, so it is very important that they must be sensible when giving this information. Sometimes they do speak to their audience, which is done through the phone-ins and they get their audiences to engage in with what’s happening and allow them to express their opinions about what is going on. However, when it comes to speaking with managers or players of a sport they need to be formal as they are important people towards the games as well as the show. As I was listening to a segment of the show there was a point where one of the hosts said ‘Are we nearly done with Hazard?’ He is a football player. This is a question posed to the audience as I believe there has been some debates about the positioning in the football team this player is in, so the hosts may have wanted to get the listeners to tell their opinions about this debate.

There are multiple presenters in this show, they speak to one another formally but also friendly as they work together and need to build a positive relationship in order to work well on their jobs. They take turns in to asking questions to any interviewees and discuss about events together. They have a lot of guests in the show, which include managers and players, but also use segments of interviews that have been previously recorded with other people. I believe this has a huge impact to the show as a whole because individuals who have a passion for sports are able to listen to what their favourite player/manager of their team has to say about something that happened in the game or even get updated to what is going on.
There isn’t much of a focus on music in this radio show, as it is an informative radio show, but sometimes they do play some adventurous dramatic music. I believe this was done to signify that this is a sports radio show and the dramatic music adds element that they will be distributing important news about sports to the listeners.

The products advertised in their show are mainly to do with sports equipment, sports centres etc. This is clearly done because as this is a sports show, it is most likely that the listeners would be individuals that have a passion for sports and even actually play sports themselves, so, it is ideal for them to use these products to advertise in this sports radio show as it gives the audiences who play sports an insight as to what is being sold or any centres they may be interested in playing in.

I believe that most likely the target audience for this show are individuals who have a passion for sports, play sports themselves and like to be update on what is going on in the sports sector. The ideal listener for this radio show will be someone who has watched a match on a particular sport, rooting for their favourite team or player to win, and whether they lose or win they would tune in to this radio show to hear the opinions the others may say about the match, the interview that is taken with the player(s) or the manager. There could also be listeners that missed a match that they wanted to watch but couldn’t watch it due other priorities so they would either tune in to get live update if they were able to access it digitally or listen to it in the night or first thing in the morning to catch up on the results, interviews and news that happened throughout the day, as this radio show gives a catch up first thing and at the end of the day.

Overall, I believe that this radio show is a good thing and gives their listeners informative content and keeps them up to date as to what is happening in the sports sector.
